WiFi On US Carrier Flights Between Europe & North America: Compared

US-based airlines scheduled to operate transatlantic flights include American Airlines

, Delta Air Lines

, United Airlines

, and JetBlue

. Additionally, Canada’s Air Canada, Air Transat, and WestJet also operate transatlantic routes in March 2025. But what are the WiFi options on these carriers on transatlantic crossings?

Some airlines have different WiFi providers with a range restricted to just the US, while other providers extend across the Atlantic and even around the world. While

Starlink is becoming a favored internet provider for airlines
, it is still hard to find on US-based airlines flying transatlantic.

United Airlines

United Airlines offers WiFi on domestic routes and short-haul international flights to countries like Mexico and Canada. Access costs most passengers $10. WiFi prices on other routes, such as transatlantic routes “depend on where you’re headed and how long your flight is.”

Examined: Inflight WiFi On The 10 Busiest International Routes From The US

Staying connected is becoming an increasingly important priority for modern-day air travelers.

American Airlines

American Airlines offers WiFi for purchase on select domestic flights and some international flights.

Simple Flying reported in November 2024 that American was in the process of expanding its WiFi
services and was partnering with intelsat.

However, compared with other US-based airlines, American is a laggard when it comes to providing free inflight WiFi. In February 2025, CNBC reported American was trialing providing free inflight WiFi on some flights due to its competitors already doing so. Those trial flights are three routes within the United States.

“More and more carriers have either launched or are preparing to offer free inflight Wi-Fi, making it harder for competitors to charge for connectivity. American’s prices vary and are some of the U.S. industry’s highest, with flight passes often topping $20.” – CNBC

When it comes to international flights, WiFi is available on some American Airlines aircraft. For example, WiFi is now enabled on all American Boeing 777-300ER widebody aircraft. Currently, the cost of an annual American Airlines WiFi subscription for two devices is a whopping $699.

American Airlines European destinations:

  • France: Paris-De Gaulle
  • Ireland: Dublin
  • Italy: Rome-Da Vinci, Milan-Malpensa, Venice
  • Germany: Frankfurt, Munich
  • United Kingdom: London-Heathrow
  • Portugal: Lisbon
  • Spain: Madrid
  • Switzerland: Zurich

While American Airlines’ WiFi is a paid service, passengers can still access its website, aa.com, for free during the flight. The cost of WiFi starts from $10, while the airline offers a monthly or annual American Airlines WiFi Subscription Plan for up to two devices. However, only AAdvantage members can purchase the subscription plan.

“Delta Air Lines two years ago announced it would make Wi-Fi free for members of its SkyMiles loyalty program, following JetBlue Airways. United Airlines plans to offer complimentary Wi-Fi on board this year using Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite Wi-Fi, a service Hawaiian Airlines, which was acquired by Alaska Airlines, also uses.” – CNBC

To connect to the WiFi on American flights, passengers should enable airplane mode and connect to the ‘aainflight.com’ WiFi signal. If they are not redirected, they should open a browser and enter aainflight.com. Passengers that connect to the WiFi are able to browse the internet, check emails, stream videos, and more.

Does American Airlines Have WiFi & How Much Does It Cost?

Nealy, all American Airlines aircraft have WiFi. The exception is some smaller regional jets.

JetBlue

JetBlue exclusively operates a fleet of narrowbody aircraft. Since 2021, JetBlue has been flying its A321s on transatlantic routes to destinations in Western Europe. Its Fly-Fi service is available on all of these aircraft, although some international flights still lack coverage. Transatlantic flights to Europe enjoy coverage.

“All JetBlue planes are equipped with free, high-speed Wi-Fi. Some flights traveling outside of the continental United States – with the exception of Europe and the UK – may have unavailable service.” – JetBlue

They can freely message using Apple’s iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Messages by Google, WeChat, LINE, KakaoTalk, Telegram, Tencent QQ, and Rakuten’s Viber. Only text messages are supported, not photos, videos, or attachments.

Air Canada’s messaging platforms are notably more comprehensive than Delta’s. Delta only specifies iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp as enabled messaging platforms.

Air Transat

Air Transat is another Canadian airline operating transatlantic flights to Europe. Currently, Air Transat does not offer any in-flight WiFi connectively to the internet. Passengers on some Air Transat flights can access in-flight entertainment, but not the internet.

WestJet

WestJet

is also set to operate a few transatlantic flights to London-Heathrow and Paris-Charles de Gaulle using its Boeing 787 Dreamliners. In-flight WiFi is provided by TELUS. It provides “free, high-speed internet to all WestJet Rewards members.”

“We are in the process of rolling out free WestJet Wi-Fi for the majority of our fleet. Until then, we will still support Wi-Fi via WestJet Connect, which requires guests to pay for access. We appreciate your patience as we continue to introduce new features.” WestJet

Conclusion

Most North American airlines now offer WiFI access on transatlantic routes. American Airlines’ WiFi is paid, and the airline is under pressure to offer it for free, while most other airlines at least offer text messaging services on platforms like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp for free. Air Canada is expected to offer transatlantic WiFi in 2026.
