Japan’s 10 Busiest Widebody Routes

Japan is a haven for widebody flights, with airlines enlisting their highest-capacity aircraft to cater to the travel demands of more than 125 million people. Many of the country’s busiest widebody services are international routes, connecting Japan to key global cities such as Singapore, Los Angeles, and Seoul. But the list also includes several domestic destinations, highlighting the reliance on air travel for long-distance domestic journeys.

Using data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, what are the ten busiest widebody routes by number of flights in Japan in 2025?

Tokyo Narita (NRT) – Bangkok (BKK)

2,292 flights

The tenth-busiest widebody route in Japan by number of flights is between Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK). Between January 2025 and November 2025, five different carriers will operate a total of 2,292 flights in each direction on this route.

As shown in the table above, Thai Airways operates by far the largest number of widebody flights to Tokyo Narita from its hub at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The Thai flag carrier deploys its Airbus A350-900s and Boeing 777-300ERs on the route, which seat a total of 321 and 348 passengers, respectively.

Tokyo Haneda (HND) – Los Angeles (LAX)

2,324 flights

Five airlines will operate a total of 2,324 flights each way between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) between January 2025 and November 2025. With 668 flights, All Nippon Airways will fly the most services, deploying its Boeing 787-8s and 787-9s on the busy route. Second-placed American Airlines will operate 654 flights, also with both the 787-8 and 787-9.

Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines will each operate 334 flights each way between Tokyo Haneda and Los Angeles. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines will use their Airbus A350-900s and Boeing 787-10s, respectively, on the route, while Japan Airlines operates its services with a mix of Boeing 777-300ERs and 787-9s.

Tokyo Haneda (HND) – Bangkok (BKK)

2,330 flights

In a sign of just how significant the market between Japan and Thailand, this is the second route between Tokyo and Bangkok to feature in this list. With 2,330 flights scheduled between January 2025 and November 2025, Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) is the eighth-busiest widebody route in Japan.

All Nippon Airways will operate the most flights, with 992 in each direction, followed by Thai Airways and Japan Airlines, each of which has 668 flights planned. The aircraft types deployed by each carrier are shown in the table below:

Between January 2025 and November 2025, three airlines will operate a total of 2,338 widebody flights each way between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). Singapore Airlines will fly the most frequent services, offering 668 flights with its Airbus A350-900s and 334 flights with its Boeing 777-300ERs.

Both Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines will fly 668 times in each direction between the two airports, with the former deploying a mix of Boeing 767-300ERs and 777-300ERs on the route and the latter using its 787-9s.

Singapore is also served by plenty of widebody flights from other airports in Japan, including:

  • Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) – 2,172 flights
  • Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX) – 1,198 flights
  • Fukuoka Airport (FUK) – 668 flights.

Two airlines will operate widebody flights between January 2025 and November 2025 on the busy route between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Kagoshima Airport (KOJ), which is the first domestic route to feature in this list. The short hop between Tokyo and Seoul is one of the world’s busiest international air routes, with services offered to and from two airports in each city:

  • Seoul – Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN), Seoul Gimpo International Airport (GMP).

The fourth-busiest widebody route in Japan is the domestic hop between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Naha Airport (OKA) in the province of Okinawa. Between January 2025 and November 2025, All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines will operate a total of 7,685 widebody flights between the two airports.

Both carriers plan to deploy a variety of aircraft on the route, as shown in the list below:

Between January 2025 and November 2025, All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines will operate a total of 8,978 widebody flights each way between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Osaka Itami Airport (ITM), making it the third-busiest widebody route in Japan.

Japan Airlines will operate just over half of all widebody services on the route, with 4,664 flights in each direction. The oneworld carrier deploys a mix of Boeing 787-8s, 767-300ERs, 777-300ERs, and Airbus A350-900s on the route. Meanwhile, All Nippon Airways will fly 4,314 times each way, using its Boeing 787-8s, 787-9s, 787-10s, 777-200ERs, and 767-300ERs.

Tokyo Haneda (HND) – Fukuoka (FUK)

11,345 flights

The second-busiest widebody route in Japan between January 2025 and November 2025 is between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Fukuoka Airport (FUK). All 11,345 widebody flights in each direction are split between just two airlines – Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. Tokyo Haneda (HND) – Sapporo (CTS)

13,151 flights

With 13,151 flights scheduled in each direction between January 2025 and November 2025, the route between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Sapporo New Chitose Airport (CTS) is the busiest widebody route in Japan. As with many of the country’s widebody domestic routes, just two airlines operate a duopoly on the route with widebody aircraft.

All Nippon Airways will operate by far the highest number of widebody flights between Tokyo Haneda and Sapporo, with 8,473 flights planned in each direction. The Star Alliance carrier will deploy a mix of Boeing 767-300ERs, 777-200ERs, 777-300ERs, 787-9s, and 767-300ERs on the route.

Meanwhile, Japan Airlines will operate a total of 4,678 flights in each direction between the two airports. The carrier will operate 4,263 flights alone with the Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with the rest split between the Boeing 787-8, 777-300ER, and 767-300ER.
